A dental crown, also known as a cap, is simply a full coverage restoration for a tooth that no longer has enough structure to support a traditional filling. The most common types are;
Porcelain Fused to Metal
The most common style. This crown has a precious or semi precious metal substrate that has porcelain fixed to it. This gives you a natural appearance , but lose the natural translucency of the tooth giving a sometimes grey appearance.
Full Metal Crown
Most commonly made of gold. These are fabricated for posterior teeth that need as little tooth reduction as possible or for people with bruxism problems.
All Porcelain Crowns
Commonly placed in the anterior (front) of the mouth and are bonded to keep the tooth’s natural translucency.
